Installing Webuzo on your VPS, step by step

VPS & Servers·· 17 views· 5 min read

The short answer: Webuzo (by Softaculous) is a multi-account hosting panel that installs with three commands, as root, on a freshly installed system. When it finishes you have an admin panel on port 2005 and a panel for each account on port 2003. It is paid (the vendor gives a 15-day trial): the licence is not chosen when you order, you ask for it in a support ticket. Of the systems you can pick with us, AlmaLinux 8 and 9, Rocky Linux 8, CloudLinux 8 and Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 work; Debian and Fedora are not on Webuzo's list.

What you need before you start

Requirement What Webuzo asks for On your server
System AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux 8, CloudLinux, Ubuntu LTS; no Debian Prefer AlmaLinux 9 or Ubuntu 22.04. Rocky Linux 9, Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu 23.04 (not LTS) will not do; CentOS 7 has reached end of life. Ubuntu 24.04 is available through a support ticket.
Clean install No PHP, Apache or MySQL installed If the server already has sites or another panel, ask for the system to be reinstalled through a support ticket.
Memory and disk 1 GB and 5 GB minimum; 2 GB and 10 GB recommended Every VPS and Cloud plan meets it.
SELinux Disabled Matters on AlmaLinux, Rocky and CloudLinux (step 3).
Open ports 2002 to 2005 (panels), 21, 22, 25, 53, 80, 110, 143, 443, 465, 587, 993, 995 and 3306 Only matters if you turned on a firewall on the server.
Licence Paid; 15-day trial Requested through a support ticket (not chosen when you order). First-line help is ours, through a support ticket, and we escalate to Webuzo.

Installing, step by step

1 Start with a clean system. If the VPS has been used, back up what is on it and ask for the system to be reinstalled through a support ticket: reinstalling erases everything.
2 Log in over SSH as root, with the IP and password you received with the server: ssh root@server-IP. If this is your first time, see the first steps with your VPS.
3 Prepare the system. The installer needs wget and tar. On AlmaLinux, Rocky or CloudLinux: dnf install -y wget tar; on Ubuntu: apt-get install -y wget tar. Then check SELinux with getenforce: if it answers Enforcing, set SELINUX=disabled in /etc/selinux/config and reboot the server.
4 Download and run the installer, one line at a time: wget -N https://files.webuzo.com/install.sh
chmod 0755 install.sh
./install.sh
It installs Apache, MariaDB, PHP, FTP, DNS and mail. It may look stuck: do not interrupt it. The log is in /root/webuzo-install.log.

First login, first domain and SSL

1 Open the admin panel at https://server-IP:2005 (or http://server-IP:2004). The username and password are root's. On Ubuntu 22.04, if root cannot log in, the Webuzo documentation says to change yescrypt to sha512 on the pam_unix.so line in /etc/pam.d/common-password and change the root password with passwd.
2 Configure the panel under Settings, Panel Config: the IP, a hostname no site will use (for example server.asuaempresa.co.mz) and the two nameservers, NS1 and NS2, which are required.
3 Point the domain at the server's IP. A VPS does not use our nameservers: pointing a domain at your VPS.
4 Create the first account under Users, Create New Account: the domain, the username, the password and the e-mail. The site owner then logs in at https://server-IP:2003.
5 Add SSL once the domain already opens on the server's IP: in the account panel, SSL, Automatic SSL, and press install next to the domain. The authority (Let's Encrypt or ZeroSSL) is chosen in the admin panel, under Settings, General.
What usually goes wrong: installing on top of a system that already has Apache, PHP or MySQL (Webuzo wants a fresh system), forgetting SELinux, a firewall that closes ports 2002 to 2005, or asking for SSL before the domain points at the server. And the admin panel logs in with the root password: make it strong, and keep it to yourself.
Install only what you will use. With ./install.sh --install=none Webuzo starts with no applications, and you pick them later under Apps, Install an App. The licence shows under Settings, Manage License; if it shows as invalid, curl -v https://api.webuzo.com/license.php tells you whether the server can reach the licence server. Still deciding? Compare with cPanel and with HestiaCP, which is free.
