The short answer: to learn, experiment or hand in work with a website, you do not need anything big. The entry plan will do, and it lets you have an address of your own, install WordPress or a hand-made site and try without fear. What matters is having the site live when the deadline arrives and a copy, in case something goes wrong.
What the site needs
| What | What to do |
| A free plan? | See what exists and what is left out before deciding: Is there a free plan?. |
| An address of your own | It gives the project a serious air and serves as a portfolio after the course: Choosing the domain. |
| What to learn | WordPress for a content site; a hand-made HTML site to understand how the web works; a subdomain for each experiment: Subdomain or folder. |
| The deadline | Put the site live days before the hand-in, not the night before: the address can take a while to reach everywhere. And test on another device. |
| Other people’s data | If the project collects survey answers or contacts, that is personal data. Say what it is for and delete it when you finish: Personal data protection. |
Getting started

| Do not forget the end of the project. An abandoned site, with no updates, is a target for those looking for out-of-date sites. If you will not maintain it, close it and keep a copy; if you will, update it. And if the hand-in depends on the site, do not leave it for the last week. |
| If the project grows, you may need more: Shared, VPS, Cloud or dedicated. For a first site, a starting idea: Which plan for a blog. |

In our plans
| Situation | Plan | Why |
| Starting: one project, a thesis site or a portfolio | Pro | 1 site, 10 GB SSD NVMe, unlimited databases to practise with WordPress, and a daily backup (make your own copy as well) |
| Several experiments or a portfolio plus projects | Plus | 6 sites, 20 GB SSD NVMe |
| Learning to run a server: installing your own software | VPS | VPS1: 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, with full access over SSH |
WHEN TO MOVE UP: when a second project needs a site of its own (Plus has 6), when the 10 GB of the Pro plan fill up, or when the course asks you to install software and use the command line, which a VPS allows. Moving up does not lose the site, so there is no need to start big.
