The table on the domain pricing page shows four columns side by side, and that is deliberate: what a name costs to get is not what it costs to keep. Reading all four saves you the surprise that usually arrives with the first renewal.

Why registering and renewing are not always the same price
The price of each extension is set by the registry that runs it, not by us. In some extensions the entry price is lower than the upkeep price; in others the two are identical to the cent. There is no rule to memorise, only the table. That is exactly why both columns sit next to each other instead of only the first one being shown.

Read the renewal column before you settle on an extension. Registration is paid once; renewal is paid every year for as long as the business lasts. Over five years, it is the second column that decides the bill.

What «free» means in the transfer column
Some extensions show free under transfer. It means moving the name here from another provider costs you nothing, and the time you have already paid for stays with the domain. It does not mean the domain becomes free: it still renews at the price in the renewal column, on the date it already had.
Where a transfer is paid, the money is not thrown away. In most extensions a transfer adds a year to the time you already hold, so you pay for a year and you get a year.

What the table does not include
The figures are per year, and they are the same ones the cart charges: both come from the same source, so there is no shop window price and a different till price. What the table leaves out is any applicable tax, which is added at checkout, where you see it before you pay.
Registering for several years at once is possible in the extensions that allow it, and the cart shows you the total the moment you pick the term. The table deliberately shows a single year, because that is the only way to compare one extension against another.
