DJ accounts on SonicPanel: permissions, the live DJ widget and automatic recording

VPS & Servers·· 9 views· 4 min read

The short answer: on SonicPanel each presenter or DJ can have their own account, with the permissions you give them. That way nobody needs the radio’s main password. On top of that SonicPanel has three things where it is stronger than VoxStream: a more customisable DJ panel, a live DJ widget for your website (listeners see who is on air) and automatic recording of whatever the DJ broadcasts live. VoxStream also lets you register and manage DJs, and records the broadcast by hand or on a schedule; the full comparison is in SonicPanel or VoxStream. Menu names change with the panel version: if you cannot find one, look for the closest word.

Who sees what

Piece What it does
Main radio account The one you received by e-mail. It sees and changes everything: settings, passwords, playlists, DJ accounts. It stays with you.
DJ account One per person. It signs in to the DJ panel and broadcasts live with its own details. It only sees and does what its permissions allow.
Permissions They decide, account by account, what a DJ can do besides broadcasting: for example touch the music, the playlists or see the statistics. The exact set depends on the panel version.
Live DJ widget A block for your website showing the DJ on air. When nobody is live, it shows the radio is on automatic.
Automatic recording Records the DJ’s live show while it airs, without anyone pressing record. It stays on the server to listen to, download or reuse.

Getting your DJs on air

1 Sign in to SonicPanel with the main account and open the DJ accounts section. If it is your first time in the panel, see first steps with SonicPanel.
2 Create one account per person, with a name listeners recognise (the DJ or the show: that is what the widget displays) and a password of its own.
3 Give the minimum permissions: to broadcast, the permission to go live is enough. Add the rest only for people who really need it.
4 Hand the DJ the broadcast details of their account and have them set up the encoder as in going live with BUTT, Mixxx or SAM.
5 Put the live DJ widget on your site: copy the code the panel gives you and paste it into the page, next to the player. See putting your radio player on your website.
6 Turn on automatic recording, if your plan and panel have it. After the first live show, check the recording appeared and sounds right.
7 When a DJ leaves the station, delete their account the same day. Asking them to stop using it is not enough.
Never give the main account to a DJ, not even “just this once”. With it they can change the broadcast password, delete the library and the playlists, and lock you out of your own radio. Everyone gets their own account; that is what they are for. See a strong password and a password manager.
Clear out recordings as you go. Recordings stay on the server; download the ones you want to keep and delete the old ones, so they do not take the space the AutoDJ needs. Recordings count towards your plan’s AutoDJ space.
