The short answer

If you have a website, a shop and company e-mail, and you would rather not think about servers, shared hosting is the right answer — and stays right for far longer than most people assume. Move to a VPS when you need to install things shared hosting does not allow, or when the site no longer fits inside the plan limits.

Signs it is time to move

1 The site started throwing error 508 at peak times — it is hitting the resource limit.
2 You need a software version, a service or a port that shared hosting does not offer.
3 You have your own application running permanently, not just web pages.
Moving up a tier changes who administers it. Above shared hosting, the system becomes your responsibility: updates, firewall and backups. Read what changes between a managed and an unmanaged service before deciding — that is the part that catches people out.
What does not change with the plan. The domain stays registered in your name and e-mail can come along. Migrating does not force an address change or lose messages — it is planned and done without the site going offline.
