Tax on a hosting invoice in plain words: included, added or not charged

Consumption tax (VAT or its equivalent, depending on the country) is an amount added to the price of a service, which the company passes on to the state. On an invoice it shows up one of three ways: on a line of its own added to the total, already inside the price, or no tax at all. What matters to you is one thing: the total at the bottom is what you pay.

How to read the tax line

What you see What it means What to do
A tax line above the total The tax is added to the price of the services. The total is the sum of the two. Nothing. Pay the total.
No tax line The price already includes the tax, or the service is not taxed in this case. Nothing. The amount due is the one at the bottom.
Two similar amounts on two invoices, with different tax Your billing details changed between the two, or the invoices are for different kinds of service. Compare the dates and the details under “Invoiced to”.

Why the tax changes

1 The country the invoice is issued from. Rules and rates vary from country to country. That is why we write no rate in an article: it is on the invoice.
2 Your billing details. An account with a company and a tax number can be treated differently from a private account. See your invoice: billing details, tax and receipts.
3 The moment. An issued invoice is not rewritten. What you correct today applies to the next invoices, not the ones already out.
4 Rounding. If tax is calculated per line or on the total, the cents can differ by a tiny amount. The printed total is what counts.

This is not tax advice. If your company needs special treatment for the tax (an exemption, for example), say so before you pay, and ask your accountant which document is needed. We cannot correct afterwards what was paid without being told.
Get the details right before the first order. Company, address and tax number on the account make the first invoice come out right. See how to get an invoice in your company name and tax number. If the tax on your invoice does not match what you expected, see the amount on my invoice looks wrong.
